Butler University sophomore Kirsty Legg and University of Illinois at Chicago junior Brian Denk have been named Horizon League Cross Country Athletes of the Week for the period of Aug. 31 – Sept. 6.

University of Illinois at Chicago Director of Athletics Jim Schmidt announced today that Howard Moore, a University of Wisconsin assistant coach who helped the Badgers to five straight NCAA tournament berths, has been hired as the 10th head men's basketball coach in UIC history.

In Game 5 of the 2010 Horizon League Softball Championship, Valparaiso (34-20) defeated UIC (22-35), 4-3, to advance to Game 8 where they await the winner of No. 5 Green Bay vs. No. 6 Butler. UIC is eliminated from the tournament after suffering its second loss.

In the second game of the 2010 Horizon League Softball Championship, No. 6 seed Butler (36-17) downed No. 3 seed UIC (22-34), 4-1, after 11 innings of play. Butler moves on to play No. 2 seed Wright State in Game 4 of the conference tournament.  



 

Track & Field standout Aaron Merrill of Youngstown State and tennis champion Mariya Kovaleva of UIC have been named U.S. Army Horizon League scholar-Athletes of the Month for April.

The Horizon League officially announced its 2010 Softball Championship bracket today. The double-elimination tournament begins on Thursday, May 13 at 10 a.m. ET and concludes on Saturday, May 15 with the title game.  No. 1 seed Cleveland State will host the annual event, as games will be played at Viking Field. 

CHICAGO - The UIC women's tennis team will face No. 4 Michigan in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday, May 14, the NCAA announced on Tuesday, May 4.

Valparaiso sophomore Sara Strickland has been named the Horizon League Softball Batter of the Week, while UIC sophomore Ashley Hewett has earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending May 2.
