Of the eight locations that served as NCAA Tournament First and Second Round sites, none are further away from Indianapolis than San Jose, CA. For many schools similar in size to Butler, being placed more than 2,000 miles away from you home city results in sparse attendance, and many school administrators acting as their team’s “fans.”

At this time of year everyone in the Horizon League thinks back to their favorite tournament memories. For Butler, there have been a lot those memories in the past 13 years. During the regular season, the Butler Bulldogs shot 3-point field goals at a 34.5% clip. Surely, that’s a low number compared to some of Butler’s teams from the recent past. All things considered, however, 34.5% is a percentage almost smack-dab in the middle among all NCAA Division I basketball teams this year.

While trying to gather as much information on the Butler-UTEP matchup I turned to a man who knows a thing or two about the Miners. Bill Knight, a writer for the El Paso Times, kindly took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions about the Miners and Bulldogs.

This past weekend in Green Bay it was the Cleveland State women’s basketball team, not the Phoenix, who unquestionably stole the show in earning the Horizon League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was a hotly-contested, drama-filled couple of days with the Vikings’ claiming their 2nd trip to the Big Dance in three seasons.

The opponent is set. Butler will play UTEP Thursday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Let’s take a quick look at the Miners and how they matchup with the Horizon League’s finest.

Continuing my theme of “firsts” during my first year with HLN, I’m enjoying my first Speedway Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship experience.

Obviously, I’m in Green Bay at the Kress Center. I say obviously because Green Bay has been the top-seeded team in this tournament for ten of the last eleven years.
